Hair Extensions the ins and outs..

Thought this quote was pretty relevant haha .. who else loves Mean Girls?

Anyway to the point .. WELCOME BACK TO MY BLOG!! Today we are talking all Hair Extensions.

I honestly cannot recommend them enough, if your thinking of getting hair extensions do it 100% it will be so worth it.

Below are some questions I asked numerous of my work pals a billion times and i'm sure your wondering the same! BTW i;m no hairdresser everything I say here is from my own experience with hair extensions!

I have gotten prebonded hair extensions so that's what i'll be discussing.

1. Do they damage your natural hair?

As i'm sure any hairdresser will tell you .. No they wont damage your hair once you maintain them properly and get them removed by a professional.

When I got my extensions out last time as in like just before Summer, my hairdresser said my hair was in great condition!! So it's all down to your own aftercare .. if you pay the money for extensions take the time to care for them.

Hair after extensions .. its literally the same as normal no damage!!

2. Do they cost a lot to maintain?

It all depends on what products you use .. I would recommend the following -

A hair mask & some type of oil or spray in conditioner.

Also with the prebonds its a must to have sulphate free shampoo!

This gem of a shampoo was recommended to me recently and i'm obsessed with it. I just love the smell of it and my hair feels so clean after using it! This only cost 10.50 which is a bargain for a sulphate free shampoo!

The conditioner to go with the shampoo is just as good! Amazing smell and my hair feels silky smooth afterwards. Even if you don't have hair extensions anyone can use it!

I originally used the Milkshake Shampoos but to be honest the felt pretty drying on my scalp and they are a bit more expensive so Im going to stick with this OGX one!!

I love this Aussie oil to rub into the ends of my hair to give it a bit of a shine.

Top Tip : Be sure to keep all conditioners and oils away from the bonds as they can loosen them!! So just apply to the ends of the hair .. far far away from the bonds!

3. What actually are prebonds or 'bonds'?

These are hair extensions that are pre tipped with Keratin and then attached to your own natural hair. They are also known as glue in hair extensions!

However, don't freak out when you hair 'glue' they wont destroy your hair just don't go trying to take them out yourself or anything .. BAD IDEA!

That's what the bonds look like .. super tiny and so hard to notice! Sometimes I can't even find my own hair amongst them .. haha

4. How much do they cost and how long do they last?

I have had hair extensions three times and the prices are pretty much the same everywhere.
Two out of the three times I have been to Gorgeous Locks Hair Extensions and I could not recommend them enough!

Gorgeous Locks are so professional and the salon is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I got Beauty Works Hair Extensions and I love them.

They cost me 395 for a full head of extensions .. it depends how much you need based on what look you want as well as the length and thickness of your own hair.  Last time I had extensions they lasted me 6 months. However, that can vary a lot from person to person!

5. Are they loads of effort?

To be honest, when I first got them I did find them a lot of work but it just becomes part of a routine. I don't style them everyday.. most nights I just braid them to keep them out of my face and then it gives them a nice wave as pictured above ^^

I only properly curl them or straighten every so often!

One thing I would say is they take ages to dry and mainly because mine are so long!! You always need to dry the bonds and around the bonds just to prevent them from tangling or matting.

I had a bit of a disaster one holiday i swam in the sea and didn't rinse them out properly after and my hair was left in knots.. so tbh for like beach holidays if you love swimming they are hassle!

Any bit of extra effort they take it's worth it to keep them longer and it's keeping your own hair nice too!! Happy Hair = Happy you .. i'm so cringe

Before Extensions ^

After Extensions ^

Also be sure to use a Hair Extension brush and not a normal one as it can tug on your hair. I use the Belle Brush and i've had it ageees as you can see the name is even faded off it haha but its still working perfect!!

So that's pretty much all I can think of about hair extensions and how I care for mine etc.. If there's anything I haven't covered pop me a message on my instagram @makeupbys_blog and i'll help you as best as I can.

If your thinking of getting extensions definitely go for it and take the plunge you'll be delighted .. they are slightly addictive but in a good way!!

If your trying to decide where to get them done i'd definitely recommend Gorgeous Locks and I love my Beauty Works Hair. Super Happy with my hair which was done by Lucy in the salon.

Hope you enjoyed and got some tips!

Much Love,
